On any day of the week, the majority of produce consumed by city denizens originates at The Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market. Established in South Philly at its initial conception, the market’s detractors have opined it to be too old and antiquated to continue on at its traditional location. If it weren’t for a few select people in Philly, the market would have found a new its new home on the other side of the Delaware River in New Jersey. Fortunately for Philadelphia, a new 667,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility has been built in Grey’s Ferry. Twice the size of the its former South Philly locale and containing the largest refrigerated system (534,735 square feet) ever built in the country, the new Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market is happily situation at 6700 Essington Avenue. The market will house 228 full refrigerated docks and will have 40-foot ceilings and an abundance of natural light brought in by a skylight running the length of the building, a central walking concourse for shoppers and a 18,000-square-foot recycling center. Thirty-two vendors have already set up shop, and the building will open to other produce vendors and the public on Sunday, April 3.
