On 20th St., just below Delancey Pl., there’s been considerable construction activity going on for a couple of months now. The building immediately to the north, 2000-02 Delancey Pl., has been under construction for even longer. According to the developer’s website, 2000 Delancey is a LEED certified, four-unit condo conversion of a historic building that was originally built in 1860. The work that’s currently most visible on 20th St. is the construction of private garage space for six vehicles.
The reason that we bring this to your attention, aside from explaining why you’ve had to cross the street every day for months over there, is the unique nature of the garages being built. The developer, Peruto Real Estate Management and Development, is making green space a priority, creating not only a green roof on the building itself, but also on some of the rooftops of the garages. It’s such a sensible idea, we’re kind of annoyed we didn’t think of it ourselves. While this green roof won’t necessarily have the insulating benefits that it would if built over a living space, it will still function to reduce storm water runoff. And really, it’s just a nice touch. Hopefully, this will serve as an example for other builders and developers in the city.
In case you’re wondering, the garage spaces will be priced at $150K per spot. Drop in the bucket, right?
