A handsome building that, until this summer, was home to the Annunciation B.V.M. School, is on the market. We’ve known that the school was closing for months, but only noticed the sign on the building last week.

For sale

The building is located at 1150 Wharton St., and is listed for a cool $3.1M, according to the listing from Colliers. It was built in 1908 for the School District, but was purchased by the Archdiocese in 1948 and has been a Catholic School ever since. The property has about 69K sqft of interior space, and sits on about three quarters of an acre of land. Along with the building, there’s a parking lot with room for about fifty cars. The building, as we mentioned, is really nice looking.

We can’t really come up with a good reuse of this building, aside from residential. Could the nearby Hawthorne School, originally built in the same year and converted to lofts in 2009 be a good example for a possible developer? Or could a private or charter school come into this space and maintain its current use instead?

No matter what the use, we just hope that no one is making an offer for this property with the intention of tearing it down. Taking down a warehouse that had seen far better days a block away and replacing it with single family homes was a no-brainer. But demolishing this building would be a tremendous shame for the neighborhood. Here’s hoping it doesn’t happen.
