It’s no secret that development in Northern Liberties has pushed to the north and west as the years have gone by. So it should come as no surprise to hear about plans for four new buildings on 6th Street, north of Poplar. You may recall, eight huge new luxury homes have been under construction at the corner of 6th & Poplar for quite some time now, and those are now finally approaching the finish line. We can’t imagine that the project just now breaking ground will be anywhere near as fancy or high-end, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Homes at 6th and Poplar

Heading up 6th Street, you’ll currently find two new foundations at 943 and 945 N. 6th St., with vacant lots on either side. All of these lots have been vacant for quite some time, though an odd, one-story shed-like structure takes up part of the northernmost lot. The home immediately to the south was built in the last couple of years, replacing a blighted, semi-destroyed structure.

The developers, 943-949 North Sixth Street Partners, purchased the lots earlier this year for $340K. They will, according to permits, be constructing four new buildings on these lots. Design work is being done by Interface Studio Architects. The lots are zoned for multi-family and there are a lot of rentals in the area, so we wouldn’t be surprised if these new structures were for apartments or condos rather than single-family homes.

Either way, it’s great to see another one of the dwindling number of vacant lots in Northern Liberties disappear. And we would guess that neighbors will be happy to see that old shed go as well. Anybody know what it was used for? It looks creepy.
