According to a recent thread on Philadelphia Speaks, Spring Garden Deli/Super Market/Restaurant shut its doors for good last week. Peeking in the windows yesterday, we can confirm that the business has closed. Located at 2200 Spring Garden St., on the northeastern corner of the Parkway House, this establishment has been a fixture here for years.
Not only did this place sell “breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late snacks,” it also served as a corner store, offering various grocery items to building residents and nearby neighbors. According to one poster on Philly Speaks who spoke with the owner, business was suffering it didn’t make sense to keep the store open. While we can’t say exactly when it opened, the signage would indicate it’s been there since at least the 1980s- does anyone remember when the store opened?
According to permits we found on the L&I Map, the store and the former office next door will not be replaced by new businesses, but by additional rental apartments. Building owner PMC Property Group will surely find more stable tenants by making the residential conversion, though it’s a shame for the neighborhood to lose this amenity. Fortunately, there’s a Wawa located a couple of blocks away, at 21st & Hamilton, which should fill many of the needs previously filled by Spring Garden Deli.
Be that as it may, it’s kind of a bummer to see a corner commercial space disappear from Spring Garden Street.
