Man, how time flies. It's been over two years since we directed your attention to a weird shed on the north side of the 1200 block of Fitzwater Street. Located behind Hawthorne Lofts, a 54-unit condo building developed by the Rufo Company, this building was owned by the very same developers. A couple years back, we heard from a reader that the building, then used for storage, might be converted into a restaurant space. But that never happened. Instead, it sat around for awhile and was recently torn down.
Now filled with a pile of rubble, the lot upon which the shed once sat has been formally lopped off from the adjacent condo building. We imagine it's still owned by Rufo, but we couldn't tell you for sure at this point. Nor can we tell you whether there are any immediate plans for the property, as we don't see any pulled permits aside from one that allowed for the demolition. Could a mixed-use building eventually rise here, with the previously expected restaurant on the first floor? Could a purely residential use be in the cards? Or could it end up being something else, like a surface parking lot? Has anyone who lives nearby heard any buzz?
