Frankford Avenue is poised for another addition, at an intersection that's seen some dramatic improvement in recent years. When we last checked in at the location where Oxford Street hits Frankford Avenue back in November, Sulimay's Urban Salon had just opened its doors at 1600 Frankford Ave.
Remember, this building experienced a major renovation a couple years ago, and the salon was the exclamation point on the project. The renovation across the street, at 1546 Frankford Ave., happened just last year. In the months that have rolled by since we last visited, a Pennsylvania SPCA satellite location has opened here.
Perhaps more exciting, the former nuisance bar at 1523 Frankford Ave. will soon get a wine bar called Fishtown Social. In the fall of 2013, the owners got support from the community for two apartments and a vacant commercial space, and earlier this year they got support for the wine bar. Yesterday, the ZBA gave their stamp of approval, so the project should proceed as planned.
At yesterday's hearing, the owners described a neighborhood bar with a relaxed, cafe-like feel. They will offer draft wine (along with beer, we'd imagine) along with small plates of appetizers, like meats and cheeses. The menu will focus on local products, which is always welcome. You can see, the business will sport enlarged window openings and outdoor seating is planned as well.
When the owners presented plans for Fishtown Social to the community, we understand they got unanimous support. This is probably due to the fact that Frankford Avenue doesn't really have anything like this concept at the moment. Just like the neighbors, we're excited to see the place take shape and pleased to see Frankford Avenue get a new addition in the food and drink department.
