For awhile now, we've had our eye on a large vacant lot where Berks and Hewson Streets meet Wildey Street right next to I-95. We first came here three years ago, with plans for thirteen homes over two different projects, five of which were going to have garages. But that plan never came to fruition. Just a year ago we checked back in and described a modified plan for thirteen homes, only this time with a drive-aisle on Wildey Street. As opposed to the first plan, this one has actually moved forward. Passing by the other day, we spied a row of seven homes on Berks St. that seem to be approaching completion.
According to the project website, four of these homes are already sold, suggesting that the homes that aren't fenced in could already be finished. With obvious success for the first phase of homes, the developers have gotten moving on phase two. Six more homes are now getting framed out on Hewson Street.
The homes are surely great. The least expensive unit, the only one without parking, was listed at just below $420K. The rest of the homes are listed at just under $450K. Considering the prices in Fishtown for a new construction home with 3 beds, 2.5 baths, 2,300 sqft of living space and parking, that sounds about right. Truly, our only gripe, and it's a minor one, is with the name of the project.
The developers are calling this project Riverview Court, which is problematic for us on two fronts. First, the word "Riverview" immediately makes us think of the mediocre movie theater on Delaware Avenue. It's the first result when you do a Google search. So that's one thing. The other issue relates to the meaning of the term "river view."
That's I-95. Then again, a name like I-95 Court probably wouldn't be too beneficial for sales. And the views from the roof decks on these homes will include both the river and the skyline. So… probably better they went with the name they picked, now that we think about it.
