A little less than two years ago, the New Acropolis Restaurant closed its doors at the intersection of Frankford & Girard. At the time, it seemed like a mere formality that the space would quickly be filled, as this corner represents the nexus of two major corridors that have seen considerable growth over the last few years. The property had been listed for sale at the too-high price of $789K, and was then listed at the still high but slightly more reasonable rental price of about $5,000/month. At those prices, there were no takers.
Finally, it seems, a new business will be opening at this location. According to Foobooz, Joe's Steaks + Soda Shop will soon be taking over the former New Acropolis space. It will be their second location, joining their original spot which is located close to the Tacony Palmyra Bridge. The new location will have seating for fifty to sixty patrons, and will surely specialize in cheesesteaks like their other outlet. With their expansion to this heavily trafficked location, the fact that they changed the name of the business from the original less than PC name should reduce the odds of constant questions and/or possible boycotts.
It's been a little curious to us that this space has sat empty for a couple of years given the action on Frankford Avenue, East Girard, and West Girard. But perhaps it was just a matter of making the dollars work for the folks who own the building. Whatever the reason for the delay, we're pleased to hear that it's now coming to an end. We're always looking for a good egg cream, and soon we'll have a new place to try.
