For decades, AC Kissling called 161 E. Allen St. its home, churning out tons and tons of sauerkraut for customers up and down the east coast. According to a story from the Northeast Times Star, the family business was being run by a third generation of Kisslings in 2011. At some point in the past couple of years however, we’d guess that the company was purchased by some other food manufacturer, as their Fishtown warehouse and office recently went on the market.

On Allen St.

According to the listing from Binswanger, the parcel is nearly half an acre in size, with buildings covering about 16K sqft of the property. Asking price is $1.5M.

It seems unlikely that another manufacturing enterprise will be looking to buy the building- instead, we’d expect residential development on this site at some point in the future, either with adaptive reuse or demolition and new construction. The majority of the building’s footprint faces the rear of one of the Penn Treaty Village buildings, which is currently under construction. It makes us wonder whether Michael Samschick, the driving force behind Penn Treaty Village, has his eye on this property.

So… who’s interested? Think there might be some kraut left over in the building? Anyone else hungry for a hot dog all of a sudden?
