Broad & Race has seen its share of construction in recent years. The western end of the Convention Center addition can be found here. Half a block to the south, Lenfest Plaza was built a couple of years ago next to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. And now, could this intersection now be seeing even more development?
A reader checked in earlier this week, wondering about the new construction activity taking place on the northwest corner. It's been home to a surface parking lot for Hahnemann University Hospital for quite some time.
So what could be in store for this North Broad Street corner? An addition to the hospital? A new PAFA building? A new hotel for conventioneers? Yet another Comcast tower?
Alas, it seems that the answer is none of the above. According to permits on the L&I Map, the surface lot ain't going anywhere. Instead, it's the Race-Vine Broad Street Line stop that's getting a little work done. Septa has pulled permits to build three new elevators, install new lighting, and otherwise improve station accessibility. And while we are certainly pleased to see that another station is becoming ADA compliant, we're disappointed that this surface lot will remain for the foreseeable future. Hey, at least the mural there is pretty cool.
