Over two years ago, we first brought you news that CHOP would be crossing the river and constructing a huge new facility on Schuylkill Avenue. At that time, some older buildings near the South Street Bridge were being demolished, ostensibly setting the stage for a groundbreaking at some point in the future. Our understanding was that the popular and reasonably priced Springfield Beer Distributor would remain until the construction began, and would then move to 22nd & Oregon.

Springfield in their air hangar

Well, groundbreaking still hasn’t taken place for the new CHOP project, and Springfield has remained in the shadow of the South Street Bridge these two years. We’re now hearing that the project could be getting underway in the relatively near future, which would mean a farewell to Springfield from the neighborhood that it called home for so many years.

But not so fast.

According to a thread on Philadelphia Speaks, it seems that plans have changed, and the news is good indeed. Rather than moving to Oregon Avenue, as was previously the plan, Springfield will instead be moving to 22nd & Washington, next door to Kermit’s Bake Shoppe.

Coming soon... beer.

So basically when this happens, you’ll be able to throw a party at your house and cater it exclusively from this corner. You’ll be able to grab a couple of pizzas, some tasty dessert, and a case (or three) of beer. Ah, urban symbiosis, how cool to see you in action!
