Back in June, we told you that a demolition permit had been issued for the Engine 46 firehouse. A month later, we learned that the property owners had agreed to meet with Councilman Mark Squilla, and Pennsport neighbors. Additionally, we recently learned that neighbors are organizing in another way to preserve the endangered Flemish-style firehouse.

The building

“This now rare example of a nineteenth century firehouse is undoubtedly full of aesthetic character and charm,” writes neighbor Anthony Maisano, in the body of a petition now circulating to prevent the demolition of Engine 46 firehouse at 1401 S. Water St., located next to I-95. “With its Byzantine banding of brick it is the architectural inspiration for the entire entertainment complex which includes Warmdaddy’s and the Riverview Theatre. Its tower is a beacon visible from the expressway. This building has much potential.”

Next to the highway

The petition is addressed to the Cedar Realty Trust, the NY-based owners of the site that also own the adjacent shopping center Riverview Plaza. According to Inga Saffron, last month’s meeting was somewhat productive, with Bruce Schanzer of Cedar Realty Trust indicating that the company would preserve the building if an appropriate tenant can be found. With no plans currently in place for the site and an agreement with Checkers apparently falling through, the possibility of the firehouse surviving is at least somewhat improved from a couple of months ago.
