Right near Reading Terminal Market, there’s a proposal currently on the table to add height to an existing building, along with a restaurant and a few dozen apartments. We’re fairly certain it’s the building next door to the former 8th Street Music location, though there’s a chance that the project may also include that building.

Getting taller

According to the zoning application, 1025 Arch St. will be getting an additional seven stories constructed on top of an existing two-story portion of the building. This addition will include a mezzanine level on the second floor, and a restaurant that includes seating on the first and second floors. Also, on floors three through seven, thirty-five new apartments will be constructed. These will be in addition to the twenty existing apartments in the rear of the building, fronting Appletree Street.

This development is somewhat similar to two other projects on the 900 block of Arch St. that we told you about a couple of months ago. This shows that demand for housing in Chinatown is continuing to grow, and core properties in the neighborhood are growing taller in response. This growth around the core is coming at a time that we would perhaps expect more construction to the north, on the other side of Vine Street.

Well, we’ll still be on the lookout for that. There just isn’t a whole lot of space left in this part of the neighborhood.
