A reader reached out to us recently, wondering about some demolition activity on the 600 block of Union Street, which is just north of the 3900 block of Haverford Avenue. We figured we’d investigate, as development would sense on this block given the amount of new construction we’ve seen nearby on Haverford Avenue. We were especially interested because we haven’t seen too much get built north of Haverford, and we wondered whether this was an indication that construction was pushing farther north in Mantua.

Closer look

You can see, there’s clearly some demolition activity going on here. But this doesn’t look like demolition in advance of new construction, it looks like demolition due to fire damage. And after we did a little bit of research, we learned that a fire did indeed strike 616 Union St. back on June 25th. As there are no news stories about the fire, we don’t believe that anyone was injured or killed, thank goodness. The Twitter feed from 2nd Alarmers posted an image of the building as the firefighters were getting the blaze under control.

As for the reader that was wondering about possible development here, it seems that’s not in the cards. Still, as we said, Haverford Avenue has seen a ton of new construction activity, like the 33 unit project under construction just to the south of here.

Even though it’s not currently happening on the 600 block of Union Street, we’d guess that it’s only a matter of time before we see more projects creep a block or two north of Haverford Avenue. And beyond too, eventually.
