It looks like Hawthorne is losing another church. Last week, a reader tipped us off about a demo permit at 1219 Fitzwater St., the Fitzwater Church of God.
You may recall, this neighborhood lost a major church last year when the New Hope Baptist Church on 12th Street was demolished. Condos will soon rise in its place. As for what will replace the Fitzwater Church of God, we honestly aren't sure. There's an application going before the ZBA in April, but the City's website only describes it as "Permit For," but there's no other information. So the application clearly wasn't inputted completely by the City. We could imagine three single family homes here, alternately a seven-unit building would be allowed here by right, since the folks who bought the building also own the lot next door.
This will be another addition for this block, which recently got a row of three new triplexes which replaced a one-story shed. A few of those units are still listed for sale, with a couple of 1 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom units being offered for $360K. Though the south side of this block is almost all affordable housing, we expect the new construction coming next door will also be of the market-rate variety.
It should be mentioned, Quetzally Mexican Food is next door to the upcoming project. If you've never been there, we strongly recommend the tacos.
