Since just after Bloktoberfest, 1500 South St. has sat vacant, a prominent South Street West address looking for a tenant to replace the relocating Baja Room. Recently, we heard some buzz that a new cafe would be taking over the former Mexican joint. And yesterday, we got some official word.
This summer, Little Spoon Cafe will open in this space. Owned by area residents Jeanne French and Julia McMeans, the new coffee house will feature java from Philly Fair Trade Roasters. In addition, they will be making use of the commercial kitchen space left behind by the previous tenants, and will offer "high quality interesting food options" as well. They will be open weekdays for breakfast and lunch and on weekends for brunch. Look for vegan and vegetarian options as well.
We're very excited to see that this space will be filled, and hope it becomes a place for neighbors to get to know each other while enjoying a cup of coffee or a tasty meal. We're just as excited to report that the building will be getting considerable work done on its facade, with design work from Otto Architects. Check out the renderings:
We were optimistic for the prospects of this business anyway, but with a dramatically improved facade they will draw much more attention to their storefront, and surely draw in hordes of customers. And you're be able to count us among them.
